Abstract

During her lifetime, Anna Neethling-Pohl was regarded as the grande dame, the leading lady, and doyenne of Afrikaans theatre. These terms of esteem are not inappropriate when the versatility and quality of this colourful artist are borne in mind. She was actress; reciter; director; radio personality; founding member of, and driving force behind, theatrical companies; professor of Drama; demagogue; organiser of national festivals and historical pageants; novelist; translator of Shakespeare's dramas and sonnets; campaigner for, and champion of, the Afrikaans language; a true patriot and devout Christian. Truly, she was larger than life. This article gives a survey and appreciation of her contribution to South Africa's culture in this, the centenary commemoration of her birth.
