The Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) achieved extraordinary prominence on the world stage at the time. A horde of war correspondents and news photographers descended upon South Africa. Among them were the photographers of the American company Underwood & Underwood who produced stereographic photographs. The Underwood & Underwood photographers were not news photographers who were after the fresh sensation of the latest scoop, nor were they part of any pro-British or anti-Boer propaganda campaign. In this essay the activities and the products of the Underwood & Underwood stereographic photographers who covered the Anglo-Boer War are evaluated within the context of the overall operations, and of the aims and ideals of Underwood & Underwood.
