Abstract

On 15 November 1918, four days after the armistice that ended the Great War (1914-1918) the then Mayoress of Cape Town, Anna Thorne, mooted the idea of donating a carillon for the tower of the City Hall as peace thank-offering from the women of the City. This idea appealed to many people and on 30 April 1925 the Cape Town Carillon was inaugurated at the occasion of the Royal Visit of the Prince of Wales to the City. The bells were cast in the Taylor Foundry, Loughborough, UK as memorial bells and were enriched with inscriptions commemorating the war areas where South Africans have fallen in the great cause. Close to hundred years later, we found it necessary to draw the attention of the citizens of Cape Town and South Africa to this historic instrument that was added to their national heritage, but about which there exists a lack of knowledge and appreciation. While we realize that the current article is still incomplete, to our knowledge it is the first documented and controlled account of what has happened then and what the current status of this remarkable and unique instrument is.
