A journey through the eighteenth century and gaining insight into the lives of a number of individuals along the way - this is the value of this publication. It follows in the footsteps of a similar book on the seventeenth century, published in Afrikaans under the title Kinders van die Kompanjie; Kaapse lewens uit die sewentiende eeu (2006), which has been translated under the title Seven Khoi lives; Cape biographies of the seventeenth century (2009). According to the author, the aim of Cape lives of the eighteenth century is to sketch the development of the Dutch colony at the Cape through a number of individual biographies, primarily for the benefit of non-specialist and non-South African readers. His ultimate goal is to be able to provide a greater insight in and understanding of the development of the country.
