Abstract

The main objective of this article is to provide a brief overview of the historical background concerning the development and standardisation of the Bantu languages in South Africa to serve as medium of instruction and to stimulate the need for creating literary works. Certain factors that contributed to the creation of orthographies and spelling rules for the Bantu languages are briefly discussed. Past obstacles that continue to generate inferior reading and language proficiency amongst Bantu speaking learners at school are pointed out. Mention is made of the fact that these languages are currently only used as medium of instruction in the lower grades of primary schools. Commentary regarding the feasibility of using the languages as a medium of instruction at secondary school and university level is given. The attitude of Bantu speaking people towards their home languages as medium of instruction at school level is discussed. The influence of mastering English as an international language on certain Bantu speaking people in the community is also mentioned. A few suggestions that may contribute to the improvement in relation to language acquisition of Bantu speaking learners in South Africa are made.
