Abstract

Through research in the archives of churches of Antwerp on the Visagie family's European background, it can be concluded that Pieter Visagie, the progenitor of the South African Visagie family, lived in Antwerp with a family, presumably his mother and father. Pieter's first son, who was born in the Cape, was named after the man whom Pieter stayed with in Antwerp. This connection strengthens the assumption that the man in Antwerp was Pieter's father. The pursuit to establish Pieter's birth-date and to further trace the origin of the family, guides the author's research to records of churches in South West Flanders and North West France. The process of locating and identifying persons in Western European documents can be a laborious task. It is not uncommon for such research to lead to a dead end. This article also indicates the various spellings of the Visagie surname in Flanders, France and South Africa.
