n South African Journal of Cultural History - Old Cape Furniture: studies in styles, Matilda Burden : book review

This book makes an important contribution to South African furniture history from a culture historical viewpoint. The author based her investigation not only on the original colonial collection in Groote Schuur, a collection compiled by the architect sir Herbert Baker for his friend Cecil John Rhodes more than 100 years ago, but also on museum and private personal collections to illustrate the pioneer- and rural furniture made in the Cape. She made a notable contribution to the history of Cape furniture firstly by investigating original archival sources, secondly by using old journals and paintings, and thirdly by dating the furniture chronologically according to style historical features, a viewpoint previously neglected or ignored by other historians.
