oa South African Journal of Cultural History - n Bronne-indeling vir Kultuurgeskiedenis: a classification of sources for cultural history

Abstract

The conference of the South African Society for Cultural History recommended in 1990 that an explanation of and a manual for use with the new system of classification of sources for Cultural History be compiled. Because History and Cultural History have different points of departure, this classification - which is based on a distinction between written, plastic and oral sources - differs to a certain extent from the traditional classification used for History. The reasons for this are given and the fact that certain primary sources such as personal writings, pictorial sources, objects and architecture are of special significance to the cultural historian is explained. Attention is also given to oral sources which are the particular terrain of Folklore, an important subdivision of Cultural History.
