oa South African Journal of Cultural History - History, television and Shaka Zulu



The problem of television and its depiction of history, with reference to the television series Shaka Zulu as a case study, is discussed. The problem is addressed within the contexts of the structures of narrative and historical discourse, ideology and myth. Particular attention is paid to South African historical discourse structures, oral tradition and historiography. The specific discursive practices of the television narrative are investigated, and attention is given to the question of realism and realistic portrayal.
