The purpose of pleadings is to define the issues in dispute in a civil case, not only for the judge but also for the other party. The opponent must be properly informed of the case he has to meet ( 1926 WLD 153). Consequently a party has a duty to allege in his pleadings the material facts upon which he relies ( 2010 2 All SA 474 (SCA) 475).
