On more than one occasion the attention of practitioners has been drawn in De Rebus to the tremendous dangers of practising without adequate professional indemnity insurance. It is so easy to make a mistake, to forget a deadline date or an important point of law that it is most unwise for any attorney to feel that he will never be faced with a claim for damages arising out of professional negligence.
Not only the grounds for divorce but also the grounds on which maintenance after divorce are granted, are being looked at afresh. For despite strenuous efforts to stem the tide of divorce, it has reached almost epidemic proportions, and has become a permanent feature of modern society. In South Africa there are 179 divorces per 1000 marriages among Whites, this being second only to the United States which leads the field with one in three marriages.
Let us look now at the application in America of the famous third degree. Captain Michael J. Grady, Chief of Detectives, Chicago Police Department, in the July, 1931, issue from True Detective Mysteries, tells how he wrung a confession from a man suspected of a brutal double murder on 21st June, 1920.
The International Bar Association was formed in 1946 to provide an international meeting ground for practicing lawyers. It is a non-political federation of national bar associations and law societies throughout the world. Its present membership consists of 55 member organisations and a large number of patrons and subscribers. The prime object of the Association is in essence that of uniting the organised bar across territorial boundaries in the search for ways of improving its services and so of advancing the efficient administration of justice under the law.
