I can tell this tale now as the magistrate concerned has passed on to a happier land where no-one pays income tax. Many years ago I defended a young Zulu employee of the Durban Turf Club who was charged with breaking and entering one of the bars at the race course and stealing six bottles of brandy. His plea was a bare denial. ""Who, me?"" he said with an air of injured innocence. I arrived in court to find my client in custody as he was unable to furnish bail and the trial commenced.
