In this article Dr D V Cowen explains some of the peculiar difficulties of translating legal material and he clarifies the duties and proper role of the translator when doing so. Although there has been much debate about the nature of translation in general, there is a remarkable dearth of writings on the translation of legal texts. Dr Cowen's article is an invaluable contribution in the field of legal drafting.
