Professor M C J Olmesdahl discusses s 6(4) of the new Divorce Act 70 of 1979 which provides that the court may appoint a legal practitioner to represent a child at the proceedings. In his opinion the rights of a child to economic, educational, emotional and legal security can be secured only by practitioners actively canvassing these issues at the time of the divorce and approaching the problem in the light of the child's rights to ensure his ""welfare"" in the widest meaning of that term.
