There are today (1982) about 400 000 Muslims in South Africa. As a result of the application of the Group Areas Act, thousands of Muslims who are classified as Indian or Coloured or Malay were forced to move into new areas proclaimed for them. The question then arose as to what would be the fate of mosques which were left behind in areas which had been declared White.
