The English legal system, once claimed to be the best in the world, is under stress as never before in its 700-year history. Last year nearly ï¿½500 m was spent on the administration of justice in England and Wales - running the courts, paying the administrators and judges and providing legal aid. In this, the first of six articles, we outline the main areas of concern and dissatisfaction.
