In February this year the Law Society of South Africa (LSSA) held a colloquium on the powers and functions of the Office of the Public Protector in cooperation with the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria (see News 'Public Protector's findings not legally binding' (2015 March DR6)). Since then, the LSSA Council has discussed the positions at the colloquium and in July this year it finalised its position paper on the powers and functions of the Public Protector's office, pending the issue being decided by the Supreme Court of Appeal and the Constitutional Court.
