Recognition of prior learning (RPL) enables individuals to receive formal recognition for skills and knowledge they already possess. The rationale for the recognition of prior learning is based on the premise that learning experientially may be as valuable as learning through theory. Implementing a prior learning assessment programme has many advantages, however, it is a complex process that does not come without its share of impediments. When an institution of higher learning intends to implement RPL, then there are a number of factors that should be considered to obviate any impediment to successful implementation. In this article these factors are discussed.
