n Educare - Why philosophy for children in South Africa?




One of the most immediate challenges confronting education in South Africa at present is the establishment of a democratic ethos and a culture of human rights supported by educational programmes and practices conducive to critical discourse and experimental thinking, cultural tolerance, and a common commitment to a humane, nonracist and nonsexist social order. With this challenge in mind, we set about exploring in this article the educational possibilities of the Philosophy for Children programme that was developed in the United States by Matthew Lipman, and which encourages the development of critical thinking and social skills.
