Various studies have shown a lack of understanding of environmentalconcepts amongst individuals of all ages. Teachers can play a substantialrole in uplifting the level of environmental literacy of thepopulation. There is, however, concern whether teachers do actuallyhave the necessary basic knowledge of environmental concepts whichthey have to teach. In this article we address the concepts which relateto environmental literacy of individuals. We focus on the way in whichconcepts are formed and how these could have an impact on teachingof environmentally related issues. The role of teacher education toensure that teachers are environmentally literate and concepts, whichshould be enhanced during teacher education to ensure an environ-mentallyliterate population, are discussed.
