Counsellor sensitivity: A model for the operationalization of sensitivityfor counsellors. This article embodies a study in analysingthe phenomenon of sensitivity and compiling a model for the operationalizationof sensitivity in the counselling situation. The literatureconfirms that sensitivity is a highly complex phenomenon. Someresearchers define sensitivity as a unitary characteristic, whereasothers conceive of it as an umbrella term for a number of looselyassociated aspects. Some of the aspects are: empathy, social perception, social sensitivity, social skills, social competence, personperception and social performance. In compiling a model forsensitivity in the counselling situation, the author focused on criteriafor sensitivity, person perception, counsellor techniques and counsellorcompetencies. The ultimate aim of the study was to providecounsellors with a medium for evaluating their own sensitivity inproblem areas of sensitivity.
