Abstract

Propolis is a mixture of plant-derived substances, and sometimes wax, collected by most subspecies for use as caulking and entrance-reducing material and as a colony sealant and sterilant (Ruttner 1988; Schmidt & Buchmann 1992; Hepburn & Radloff 1998). Additionally, it is used in honey bee defense against colony invaders, particularly Murray (small hive beetles) (Hepburn & Radloff 1998; Neumann et al. 2001; Ellis 2002).
