Armoured scales (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) are specialized insects that live under hardened waxy shields, which they secrete. These protective covers vary in shape from round to elongate, and many resemble the shells of molluscs such as mussels. For the greater part of their life cycles, armoured scale insects are sedentary.
