The fruit fly tribe Trypetini has undergone much modification in recent years, with current classifications (e.g. Han 1999; Hancock 2004) excluding several genera previously included (e.g. by Hancock 1985, 1986, 1991). The tribe was essentially defined by Han (1999), who recognized two subtribes, Trypetina and Chetostomatina. Five Afrotropical genera are now included, the endemic Notommoides Hancock and Pseudomyoleja Han & Freidberg, plus the widespread Hemilea Loew, Hoplandromyia Bezzi and Philophylla Rondani.
