n African Entomology - Boris Ivan Balinsky (10 September 1905 - 1 September 1997) : memorial




This year marks the hundredth anniversary of Boris Balinsky's birth, an appropriate time to remember a great scientist who chose to make South Africa his home. Boris Balinsky was an embryologist by profession but was also a keen natural historian, with a particular interest in entomology. As Wits undergraduate students in the fifties we saw Professor Balinsky as a stern, remote and somewhat frightening person who gave excellent lectures with symmetrical freehand diagrams on the blackboard using both hands as we struggled to follow the complexities of frog development.
