The first impression I had of this book was that it was physically weighty, and I soon realized that this was metaphorically true of its contents and production too. Printed on high-quality paper, the book is replete with exquisite colour photographs; even the endpapers are beautiful. The subject matter is the first publication of the UAE (United Arab Emirates) Insect Project, a complete inventory of the non-marine arthropods, instigated under the inspired patronage of His Highness Sheikh Tahoon Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. This ambitious project involves over 160 systematists from 27 countries, including a couple of South Africans, and is an exemplary contribution to the goals of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
