The larvae of Colophon neti Barnard and ProsopocOilU5 natalensis Parry are descriptionbed and compared. These are the first lucanid larvae recorded from South Africa. Some Colophon larval characters are similar to those in primitive (non-lucanine) genera and do not support the currently accepted, but tenuous, hypothesis of relationship to the Lucaninae based on adult characters. Other larval (and adult) characters prevent the inclusion of the genus in any of the recognized primitive subfamilies. Prosopocoilus natalensis is also compared with the Australian species P. bison (Olivier).
