When defensive bleeding was induced by handling adults of Decapotoma lunata Pallas (Coleoptera: Meloidae), beetles lost a mean of 7.4 % body mass. Previously unresponsive to water, they then drank sufficient water to replace 60 % of the mass loss due to reflex bleeding. Water loss should not be ignored when considering the cost of defence in insects.
