oa African Entomology - First record of Diastatidae (Diptera: Schizophora) from East Africa, with descriptions of two new species

Abstract

Afrotropical Diastatidae are confined to Diastata Meigen. Two new East African species are descriptionbed in the Diastata montana species-group: D. afrocuta (Kenya) and D. freidbergi (Tanzania). A key to the East African species of Diastata is presented. The distribution of the D. montana species-group is discussed, particularly in the light of close affinity between the allopatric D. freidbergi sp. n. and D. montana Cogan (Cameroon). Such disjunct distribution patterns are attributed to climatic changes since the Pleistocene.
