Acoustic signals play an important role in mate recognition during the mating behaviour of many Orthoptera. The song characteristics and behaviour of seven species of gomphocerine grasshoppers are descriptionbed in their natural habitat. These are the first published details of calling songs of southern African Acrididae. These acoustic signals can provide a useful technique for improving our understanding of the systematics of acoustic Orthoptera.
