Makis Tzilianos (Μάκης Τζιλιάνος), has been mainly known as a sonnet poet. As a poet, he writes on a wide spectrum of issues deriving from his travels and life experiences from the lands he has lived in. Greece and South Africa play an important role in his South African poetic creation, Greece through descriptions of its natural beauty and his frequent reference to the reality of immigration and South Africa through depictions of events referring to its political past. His linguistic style is enriched by the use of words emanating from the South African environment an assertion of the impact South African society has had on his poetry.
