Abstract

This article explains why Artorius (i.e. King Arthur) and Digenis can be seen as representing the frontier fighters on the western and eastern limites of the Roman (Byzantine) Empire. It analyses the characteristics of the ideals for which these fighters were warring and gave their lives. These ideals are embodied in the concept of Romanitas, which played an important role in both fighters' life.
