Abstract

A mayor factor in the loss of woman's divine status was the gradual dawning of realization of the truth of biological fatherhood, described as the "greatest revolution in human thought". Thus came the rise of value systems which enshrined maleness as power and defined woman as its opposite, setting every man over every woman, husband over wife, brother over sister, son over mother. This article aims at making the female condition that occurs today in the Greek institutional and social arenas more understandable, starting from the women's position in the Byzantine and post-Byzantine times.
