This article examines the strength, acceptance and influence of Kazantzakis's voice on today's society, chiefly on that of the Greek reality, using as starting-point his writing Kapetan Michalis (Freedom or Death). This boorish warrior of the last century's agrarian society as well as Kazantzakis's heroic nihilism in general are unfamiliar to the Greeks of today who live in a gasped society that seems to be losing its myths and its ideals. However, Kazantzakis having the perspicacity of the thinker, has achieved to penetrate the agony of human existence, to crucially tackle contemporary questions and, finally, to present values and directions for a fruitful and essential intellectual quest.
