n Ekklesiastikos Pharos - Η οθωμανική κυριαρχία στον ευρωπαϊκό ελλαδικό χώρο και το γαιοκτητικό καθεστώς

In the framework of cultural and socio-economic conditions which were marked by the decline of the Ottoman Empire in Greece during the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th Centuries, this article examines the creation, structure and function of the çiftlik (Ottoman feudal estate). The destruction of the Ottoman agricultural society during this period brought about great pressure and strain on the Greek population regarding husbandry and agriculture, while the search for new grazing grounds led to serious conflicts. In the course of our analysis relevant feudal and capitalistic issues are identified and thoroughly discussed.
