During the reign of the Comneni (1081-1185), the imperial court protocol is reformed in order to deal with the new governing policy, which becomes increasingly centralized under the imperial family establishment. This protocol includes the ceremonies which take place in the imperial court and increase the prestige of the dynasty. This article describes the ceremonial of the imperial births, weddings and deaths and attempts to compare these Comnenian ceremonies to the ones of former Byzantine dynasties.
