Jeremiah 21:1-24:10 is the text chosen for the purpose of this article. We have to distinguish between the history reflected by these texts and the use of this history in a later context. One should perhaps say the re-applications of the history as it was understood by those who did the reflection and re-application. It is an application of an already interpreted history. In the case under discussion, it seems that prophetic oracles reflecting certain historical events are used to address issues of leadership in this later interpretative context. The matters addressed relate to with both religious and civil leadership issues. Probably reflecting a perspective from an exilic context, failed leadership is regarded as the cause of the exile. The texts are applied in this exilic context for didactic purposes.
