Abstract

The so-called empire of Nicaea was one of the successor states to Byzantium which were created in the aftermath of the capture of Constantinople by the armies of the Fourth Crusade in 1204. The aim of this article is to discuss the military ideology of the newly-founded state of Nicaea in the early years of its existence. It will examine the extent to which traditional Byzantine ideas about warfare can be found in the Nicaean military ideology and will analyze the influences of foreign cultures. This analysis will rely mostly on works of rhetoric, mainly imperial orations, since rhetoric was the main means through which Byzantine rulers promoted their military profile and advertized their military policies.
