Provisioning for child-headed households Julia Sloth-Nielsen P rojections indicate that the number of AIDS orphans in South Africa will double to 800 000 by the year 2005. Indica- tions are that the majority of chil- dren orphaned by AIDS at present are not being accommodated through formal placements in alter- native care structures. The African kinship care system that would once have absorbed children without parents into communal life can no longer be relied upon to fulfil that function.
