Extracted from text ... ESR Review ? Vol 3 No 3 10 T he World Summit on Sustainable Develop- ment (WSSD) took place from 26 August?4 September 2002 in Johannesburg, South Africa. The resultant Plan of Implementation (the Plan) has placed socio-economic rights high on the global develop- ment agenda. The Plan affirms that sustainable development is not an end in itself but a means of realising human rights. Sustainable develop- ment relies on the integration of three interdependent and mutually reinforcing components: economic development, social security and environmental protection.
