This outbreak, the result of contaminated wells that were not identified or simply ignored by authorities, resulted in some 2 300 people falling ill and in the death of seven. In early May 2000, heavy rainfall caused flooding in the small community of Walkerton. Water contaminated with E. coli bacteria entered the system through one of the community's three wells.
