Abstract

An abscess is an accumulation of pus (thick liquid comprising dead leucocytes that have responded to bacterial infection) surrounded by animal tissue. It initially occurs as a painful firm swelling under the skin, and may be cold or hot to the touch. It may also occur internally in an organ or other area of the body.
