The wheat price reached a 20-year record high of R4 544/t on 16 November, despite the global wheat price declining from US$220/t to US$208/t since August. If the price falls to US$10/t below the base price of US$222/t for three consecutive weeks, a further increase in the local tariff can be expected. The weak rand, the possibility of a further tariff increase and a smaller crop due to drought in the Swartland region, have resulted in the domestic wheat price enjoying strong support.
