n Farmer’s Weekly - Maize crop under pressure : market analysis

The current drought conditions, brought about by the El Niño weather phenomenon, has resulted in poor crop production across much of South Africa. The country's forecast 12,4 million ton maize crop is therefore unlikely to be realised. A more realistic crop estimate would be between 9,8 million and 10,9 million tons. This would result in maize imports of between 1,4 million tons and two million tons. El Niño conditions are expected to affect crops until March 2016.
