Abstract

The consequences of SA's drought and farmers' being forced to cull or sell off their animals means that local beef prices are increasing. Worldwide, consumers are under pressure, driving a move away from beef towards cheaper animal proteins such as poultry and pork. Ample supply globally of the former will keep prices low, while avian influenza will continue affecting exports. Locally, US shipments under Agoa have arrived, resulting in plentiful supplies and low prices.
