Abstract

Anyone who can "make two ears of corn" grow where before only one grew, wrote Jonathan Swift back in the early 1700s, will "do more essential service to his country, than the whole race of politicians put together". Never was this more pertinent than now and nowhere more so than in Africa. In August last year, Lincolnshire Wolds farmer Tim Lamyman broke the world record for wheat yields with an astonishing 16,5t/ha. Only 10 days later, Rod Smith of Northumberland beat this with a yield of 16,52t/ha.
