The SA sugar industry is bracing itself for the tax on sugar-sweetened beverages announced by Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan in his budget speech earlier this year. The tax, which is set to take effect on 1 April 2017, aims to reduce the prevalence of obesity in South Africa. Obesity has become a global epidemic and South Africa is no exception: annual per capita consumption of sugar in the country was 34,42kg last year, up from a record low of 27kg in 1999.
