n French Studies in Southern Africa - La spectaculaire entrée du Cafre sur la scène littéraire française : Nicolas Chrétien des Croix

Although the so-called "Cafres" appear in praise poems, epics, chronicles and tragico-maritime theatre from as early as the end of the fifteenth century, it is only at the beginning of the seventeenth century that they become the subject of a play with by Nicolas Chrétien des Croix. This 'début' is particularly interesting because the Cafres are no longer merely secondary figures. We intend here to analyse their roles and the shifts in their characterization within the esthetics of the theatre of that time.
