The present article explores the textual representation of the mother in , first volume of Marguerite Yourcenar's autobiographical trilogie . The study sets out to discover the nature of the textual relationship created by an author who never knew her own mother and to establish what the author thus reveals about herself. This analysis also considers different interpretations of the portrait of the mother figure in order to establish its importance in Yourcenar's writing.
