Abstract

Ousmane Sembène, who considered himself to be a "modern griot", felt that cinema rather than literature was a more effective medium to reach his people and deliver his message. As a result, he proceeded to adapt a number of his novels and short stories to the screen. This article examines the way in which Sembène utilises the varied techniques of cinematic art in one of his earlier films to transform his novella of the same name into an art form which is not only more striking but which communicates its message to a much larger audience.
